PRICE rises in the Balearics last month were the lowest of any region in the country, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirmed yesterday.
Although government figures show that prices only rose by 0.1 percent in the islands in August, they also reveal that since the beginning of the year, the Balearics has clocked up the highest accumulated cost increases in the country, by 1.4 percent.

In year-on-year terms, prices in the Balearics last month were 1.8 percent higher than they were in August of 2009.
Across Spain as a whole, prices went up in 15 regions last month but remained stable in the Canary Islands and in Navarre. The Consumer Price Index (IPC) rose by 0.3 percent in August, its accumulated rise since the beginning of the year has been 0.8 percent and the year-on-year increase stands at 1.8 percent.

Last month, regions of the country where prices rose the most were Andalucia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Valencia, Madrid and the Basque Country. All had August increases of 0.3 percent, the same as the national average.

Although the Balearic Islands had the highest accumulated price increase rate since the beginning of the year (1.4%), it was closely followed by Madrid (1.1.%) and by Catalonia (1.0%).
