Palma.—Representatives of traders from the weekly street market in the Avenidas met yesterday for an hour-and-a-half with Health and Consumer Affairs Councillor, Rosa Llobera.

To clarify any misunderstanding over recent newspaper reports, Llobera said that the Council has no intention to move the market from its current location to Son Fuster on the metro line, north of Palma's central station in Plaza España.

Other complaints by the marketeers related to the Council's failure to improve the maintenance of the area of the Avenidas where the market is held. Traders feel neglected because they pay appropriate council taxes for the privilege of street selling.

There appears, they said, to be no control over illegally parked cars which intrude on market space and no rubbish containers so that marketeers can clear up after the day is over. The Council said they would look at both these issues and provide on-site Environmental advisers to help stall holders recycle post-sales waste in the correct manner.

A timetable of meetings has been set up so that a working party can make sure necessary changes and proposed improvements are implemented prior to the next tourist season.
