Palma.—The regional government, the Majorcan Tourist Board, the Majorcan Hoteliers Federation and the Balearic Hotel Chain Association voted unanimously yesterday to do away with the old Majorcan Tourism Foundation (FMT). All previous functions of the Foundation will now be transferred to a new organisation that the government is setting up under the auspices of the Balearic Tourism Agency (ATB).

The ex Managing Director of the old Tourism Foundation, Maria del Mar Suau, is being replaced by the regional Minister for the President's Office, Jaume Juan. He will be responsible for unwinding the whole infrastructure of the old foundation.

Juan said yesterday that as the Balearics, like the rest of Spain, is still tackling an economic crisis, it is important that duplication of work and research is avoided. The whole machinery of the old tourism foundation is to be dismantled so that it remains as nothing other than a debating platform. The real work will be passed over to the ATB.

Other representatives of the tourist industry who contributed to yesterday's decision echoed the sentiment by saying: “Just one organisation like this is more than enough for Majorca.” Film Commission
It is the Mallorca Film Commission which is apparently stealing the spotlight from the old tourism foundation as the new generator of international interest in the island. The new Partido Popular government has been quick to recognise its potential and is creating a new department for the Commission.

The opposition Socialists meanwhile said they are not happy about the spontaneous removal of the former FMT Managing Director and the new appointment of Jaume Juan, as the choice of who should fill the post should be made through public election.
