STAFF REPORTER THE academic year began in the Balearic Islands yesterday with over 156'600 students starting a new term at 399 schools across the region. The regional ministry for Education said that the number of pupils is up 1.01 percent in comparison with last year. It added that of the 399 education centres, five are new thus extending available places by 1'710 at a cost of 16.7 million euros to the Balearic government.

Another 12 colleges and two institutes have been enlarged and reformed bringing down by a third the amount of teaching that has to be done in portakabins. Temporary accommodation will continue however in Manacor and on the island of Ibiza as an “interim solution” until new school projects, already underway, are complete. In total 60.8 million euros are being spent on both new education centres and the reform of already established ones.
