STAFF REPORTER REGIONAL and national governments are negotiating “a change” to their agreement over the extension of the railway service from Sa Pobla to Alcudia, said Balearic government spokesperson, Joana Barcelo yesterday.

The move comes following the outright rejection by Alcudia Town Council of the so-called “northern route” favoured by the regional Transport ministry over and above its “southern” alternative which runs past the Albufera natural park.

Following a meeting of the Balearic government, Barcelo warned that central government may decide to use the funding for the train elsewhere if an agreement is not reached. She didn't specify the nature of proposed changes but said that it was to do with “the problems” that the regional Transport ministry was encountering in firming up which route the rail track extension was to follow.

Barcelo said that one of the concerns of the Balearic government had been for “maximum concensus” to exist between local authorities on public transport infrastructure. She said she hoped that further details would be released before next Tuesday's Parliamentary meeting in Palma.
