Eight people in prison pending trial for Son Banya shooting

EIGHT of the nine people arrested in connection with last Monday's shooting in the Palma shanty town of Son Banya, in which one woman died, have gone to prison without bail pending trial.

Josefa Moreno Cortes, nicknamed “la Parrala” died in a gangland-style shootout at her home in what police believe to have been an inter-gypsy clan row over drug money. The victim herself had been waiting to serve a six-month jail sentence for her part in an infamous drug racketeering case in Son Banya which came to trial at the beginning of this year. Moreno Cortes was the niece of Francisca Cortes Picazo, locally known as “La Paca,” leader of the “La Paca” gypsy clan, notoriously linked to drug trafficking.
