Palma.—Local businesses have spent this summer season complaining again about the high presence of prostitutes, most of them from Africa, and street vendors and yesterday's operation was a little too late for many. However, Calvia has had to get over a change of council and financial cut backs.

Nevertheless, 24 prostitutes were arrested and 19 street vendors apparently in Spain illegally, were detained.
Tourist hot spots
The police targeted the main tourist spots in Magalluf, such as Punta Ballena and the Avenida s'Olivera.
Similar hot spots were hit in Santa Ponsa and during the operation which lasted an hour-and-a-half, around 50 prostitutes were processed and their documentation checked.

Apart from a few Rumanians, the rest were either Nigerian or Senegalese and they were body checked by female officers who confiscated a host of expensive mobile telephones.

Many remained in police custody yesterday, especially those who were in the country illegally and they could now face deportation.
