THE Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo, announced yesterday that Palma council hopes that construction of the new Convention Centre will begin early next year.

Calvo made this announcement accompanied by the director of the Town Planning department, Yolanda Garvi, after a meeting of the Town Planning Management Committee which, amongst other agreements, approved granting a licence to the school built by the Balearic Foundation for Education and Family in ParcBit.

The licences for the start, carrying out and ending of the work have already been applied for and, in principal, will be granted shortly. The Committee also granted four licences for telephone masts.

Calvo reaffirmed the “commitment” of Palma council to the project to create a Conference Centre, which would only be modified to “improve” its current design.

On February 19 the company Palau de Congressos de Palma S.A. formed by the Balearic Government and Palma council, awarded the construction contract for the Convention Centre, a hotel and a car park to a conglomeration led by the company Barcelo and formed by the companies Globalia, Sampol, Iberostar, and Acciona. The designer of the project is the architect Patxi Mangado.

Calvo said that to start the work on the Convention Centre and the hotel various steps have to be taken which, according to her, should have been taken by the previous Palma council, presided over by Catalina Cirer.

With regard to this, Garvi said that the works licence had not yet been granted to the conglomeration which will construct both buildings, and added that the site where they are to be constructed is still not the property of the council, as the planned agreement with NeinverBolonia has still not been signed.

Once this is signed the council will be the owners of the site. Garvi also said that for the work to start, other building work in the area, such as the extension of the Calle Manuel Azaña, should be completed.
