REGIONAL president Francesc Antich said yesterday that he was looking for “any possibility” to save the Palma-based airline Futura and to give assurance to 1'200 staff after the airline went into administration.

With Futura wanting to cut half its fleet, Antich announced that a special committee made up of senior regional government ministers will meet today for the first time to make an exhaustive analysis of the airline industry's increasing inability to withstand the effects of the high cost of fuel. Antich wants airline company officials to become involved in the talks to get to the root of the problem.

The Balearics is a tourist destination, said Antich, and therefore it is essential we provide a “good transport” network as much for our Island residents as for visitors.
