WHILE the minister of tourism remains upbeat, the same cannot be said for certain sections of the industry in Majorca.
Leading local hoteliers in Calvia are deeply concerned about the state of tourism, according to reports yesterday, with fewer hoteliers than ever planning to open this winter.

Some leading tourism experts have said that hoteliers have been forced to slash their prices to fill their rooms and many bars and restaurants are planning to close early this year. Point-in-fact is the Magalluf water theme park which has already closed its doors for business, a month earlier than expected.

The business community in Magalluf has claimed that it has been a summer season to forget with tourists spending less than usual and with the summer season getting shorter every year.

The majority of local hotels are expected to close their doors for business at the end of this month which is expected to lead to a surge in unemployment. There are already 43'000 people in the Balearics claiming benefit and the figure is set to rise dramatically once the summer season draws to a close.

The local government is expected to come under pressure to do more to try and attract a greater number of winter tourists to the island.
