STAFF REPORTER OVER 156'600 schoolchildren will be starting the first term of the 2009-2010 academic year today in the Balearics, confirmed Barbara Galmes, the regional Minister for Education yesterday.

She said the figure is 1.01 percent higher than last year. The Minister reported that the Balearic government is not intending to cut spending on Education next year.

Galmes explained that a Modernisation Plan aiming to upgrade the use of technology in schools is in full swing with a programme which will equip classrooms with digital equipment replacing the old analogue. The move comes after the regional Education ministry has added another 27 million euros to Central Government subsidies for the purpose - staff training is also included in the budget.
