MAJORCA is to host the first international “Spa World” congress to be held in Spain, at the Hotel Hilton Sa Torre in Llucmajor on 24, 25 and 26 September.

The Balearics is the region of Spain “with the largest number of hotels given over to fitness and well-being spas,” Javier Suarez the Congress Director said yesterday.

Around a fifth of the islands' hotels have spa facilities he claimed, offering 156 centres for rest and relaxation.
The Congress will be explaining to hotel proprietors “the importance of quality and not quantity” said Suarez. He affirmed that he was not proposing that more hotels with spa facilities need to be built but rather that those hotels already in existence which do not have health and fitness installation should be given them.

The Spa industry in the Balearics, reported Suarez brings in 444 million euros a year, 243 million of which is from the tourist industry but the remainder is paid by Balearic residents.

The regional Minister for Tourism, Joana Barcelo said that one of the key elements to enable the Balearics to compete more successfully in an ever-growing offer of holiday destinations is to provide quality service and that “something extra special” which will make visitors want to return. Barcelo said it was also imperative to extend the tourist season and ensure that there are different business, sporting and cultural activities all the year round.

Suarez said that the Congress will be led by experts in the field.
