THE Ocean Village cruise line left its Palma base on Tuesday after a highly successful eight years here. The somewhat sad occasion was marked by a farewell lunch on board the liner where Benita Foster the company's Resort Manager and Managing Director of Ocean Village, Fleet Product & Services Director of Carnival UK Nick Lighton expressed their heartfelt thanks to their guests, the representatives of local suppliers, land agents, port agents, port authorities, airlines, hospitals, the British Consulate and the Guardia Civil.

Benita recalled her reaction when initially faced with the task of managing the Palma operation: “I had a few sleepless nights wondering what I was getting into; it was a challenge because I had to find a team that were capable of working to the highest standards, I was fortunate to find that team and during the eight years we worked together we definitely reached our goals, and for that we can be proud.”

After lunch in the celebrity chef James Martin's Bistro Restaurant Nick Lighton spoke of his gratitude to Benita and her team, recalling, “I remember this wonderful lady who strode into the office at interview and told us exactly how we were going to run this office. Her team has been fantastic, and that says everything about Benita… about her leadership.” Mr. Lighton made a presentation to the ship's Captain Angelo Vago commenting how he was honoured to say that Captain Vago had been the bedrock of the organisation.

He continued, “This is his final tour of duty with Ocean Village and will be moving to P & O which is quite a landmark because he will be the first continental European Captain of a great British cruise liner… and I'm absolutely delighted.” Several dedicated Ocean Village personnel missed the lunch; they were otherwise engaged at the airport sorting out the problems caused by the French air traffic controllers strike…which I guess is par for the course!
