Palma.—For the Balearics, the Agency reported that the month had been “normal”, a little cooler than expected in Minorca but slightly hotter than average elsewhere in the Islands.

Rainfall shortage was registered in the Balearics last month, along with the region of Andalucia where levels were down by 25 percent, but in Extremadura rainfall in August was double the historic average.

For the country as a whole, only the months of August in 2003, 2009 and 2010 had higher average temperatures, confirmed AEMET yesterday, describing last month as “very hot” and 30 percent drier than normal. Measurement of temperature and rainfall is made against the historic average running from 1971 to 2000. The highest temperature recorded in the country last month was 41 degrees at Pamplona airport, breaking the previous August record of 40.8 degrees back in 1987.

The average temperature in Spain last month was 24.8 degrees Centigrade, 1.4 degrees higher than the historic average for August. Rainfall averaged out over the 31 days at 17 litres per square metre, resulting in the whole of the country being categorised as “dry”.
