More than 165,000 children returned to school yesterday but only for a day because teachers have voted for strike action from Monday.
While schools can’t official close, only a skeleton teaching staff are expected to be working on Monday as thousands of teachers protests against Balearic government plans to introduce a three tier language system to the school curriculum. The Balearic government wants all local pupils to learn English, Spanish and Catalan, a move which has put the administration on a collision course with teachers. They say that there are not sufficient teachers, specialised in these three languages, to enable the new education plan to be introduced.
