THE Balearics was the region with the third biggest deficit in its accounts last year, with a shortfall of 79 million euros, beaten only by Valencia (971 million euros) and Catalonia (723 million euros). The figures were released yesterday in Madrid after a meeting of the Fiscal and Financial Policy Committee presided by central finance minister Pedro Solbes. Other regions with deficits were the Basque Country, La Rioja, Murcia, the Canary Islands, Aragon, Castilla-Leon, Extremadura and Navarra
Galicia, on the other hand, showed a surplus of 63 million euros.
SURPLUS
Other regions with a surplus were Asturias (60 million euros), Andalucia (52 million), Cantabria (15 million), Madrid (eight million) and Castilla-La Mancha (one million euros). The Balearics is seeking extra funding for education and health care, alleging that it has to provide basic services for a large floating population.
