THE Balearic Ministry for Health and Consumer Affairs has estimated that, in 2007, a total of 30'084 children between 6 and 8 years old on the islands will receive free dental treatment.

Of this total, 23'511 will be on Majorca, 3'774 on Ibiza and Formentera and 2'799 on Minorca. The Ministry will set aside 702'491 euros for this, to pay the 93 dentists signed up to the Balearic Children's Dental Health Plan, of which 16 are in the public sector and 77 in the private sector.

Sources from the Ministry, headed by Vicens Thomas, said that the islands have, since 2005, had a programme very similar to the Dental Health Plan announced by the Spanish Minister for Health, Bernat Soria, which ensures that all Spanish children between 7 and 15 years old can make free visits to the dentist.

In 2002 the then Balearic Government designed and structured a plan with the aim of guaranteeing dental care for children of between 6 and 15 years old. This means that this year children born in the Balearics in 1999, 2000 and 2001 are eligible for this plan.

The Balearic Ministry highlighted the fact that since this Plan was put into operation, around one million euros has been invested to cover the cost of dental treatment by dentists in both the private and public sector, who are signed up to the agreement. The programme allows a free choice of dentist, and parents can choose between specialists in the public health service or private dentists who are signed up to the scheme.
