STAFF REPORTER ALCUDIA'S brand new ferry terminal will officially open today, said the Balearic Ports Authority yesterday, adding that it will gradually build up its operations over the course of the week.

The new installations mean that the hordes of Majorcans who set off for Ciutadella every year from Alcudia will be able to do so in considerably improved comfort. At the moment however, although embarkation will have to continue from down on the jetty because the passenger walkways known as “fingers” are not yet ready, the terminal building itself will replace the portakabin structures which have been acting as temporary check-in areas.

The 3'000 square metres of the new terminal will offer a better boarding and disembarkation service. Last week, an official reception party had been held to celebrate the forthcoming opening of the extensive new structure. At a cost of 13 million euros, the new terminal has eaten up over half of the 24 million euros which the Balearic Ports Authority has invested in port infrastructure in Alcudia over the past five years.
