STAFF REPORTER WITH many hotels in the Balearics starting to close their doors this week due to lack of bookings, there are large numbers of tourist businesses which will be reporting losses said Hotel Chain Association President, Aurelio Vazquez yesterday.

Vazquez described this year's summer season, almost at an end, as “mediocre to poor” although he said that the Balearics had benefited from the fact that people who would normally have gone to a Caribbean destination were not going so far a field this year because of the recession.

He claimed that tourists who might otherwise have been heading for Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Cancun in Mexico were happier staying closer to home - either in the Balearics or other Mediterranean destinations. Vazquez said that nevertheless, many holiday-makers who have come to the Balearics have been taking advantage of bargain offers and are spending less during their stay on the Islands. As a result, hotel chains have been cutting their staffing levels prior to the end of the statutory six-month tourist season.
