Palma.—Passenger liner The World, moored up in Palma yesterday is a ship with a difference.

It is a vessel serving as a residential community, owned by the people who live on it themselves. The owners, from about 40 different countries live on board as the ship slowly circumnavigates the glob - staying in most ports from two to five days.

Some residents live on board full-time while others visit their floating home periodically throughout the year. The maritime real estate project has been mastermined by a company calling itself “ResidenSea” with its headquarters in Miramar, Florida. The ship has some features that other cruise liners have but some which are quite different - such as a grocery store and delicatessan. Five restaurants supplement the kitchens in all the apartments. At any one time, the ship carries between 100 and 300 residents plus their guests. The ship has a theatre, library and live musical entertainment. As of last year, a 328 square foot studio on the ship has a list price of 600'000 U.S. dollars; a 2-bedroom plus bathroom 2'950'000 dollars and The World suite, 13'500'000 dollars.
