The Calvia Councillor responsible for foreign citizens, Angie Guerrero, fronted a press conference in the Party Popular’s (PP) headquarters to explain to the media why Calvia Council will be tabling a motion calling for the reintroduction of the old style plastic resident permit at the next Plenary Session on the 26th September.
The council will put forward the motion, which she hopes will draw wide political support, and if supported will then take it on a long path that will eventually lead to Brussels and a change in the law.
In Cllr Guerrero’s statement she made the point that she and her colleagues had been listening carefully to foreign residents and was now happy that it was “time to take action” on this matter.
Questioned by reporters as to why the council had made this decision she remarked that “We are doing what the vast majority of the foreign citizens of Calvia want us to do.” It appears that British residents in particular, feel at a disadvantage, as there is no law to insist that a person should carry an ID card, unlike most other European countries.
