A London-based private investment group will unveil plans later this month to build a luxury new development in Canyamel consisting of up to 77 luxury villas and a five star hotel, the promoters announced yesterday. The official launch will take place in Puerto Portals on September 24 and will include a fashion show, an art presentation and auction. Organisers have also chartered yachts and helicopters to take guests up to Canyamel to see for themselves the development which will be taking place. Building work on the first 21 villas will start next month. The private investment group includes numerous international investors who have purchased a 400'000 square metre plot of land adjacent to the golf club. Each villa will be built on a 2'000 square metre plot of land and prices for each home will range between 1.5 and three million euros. It is expected to be one of the most exclusive developments Majorca has ever seen.
A spokesperson for the developers said yesterday that providing planning permission was forthcoming they would also build a polo course and a major putting green. At the moment they are in talks with a series of international hotel chains over the five star hotel. Marketing the development, which is in one of the most sought after places on Majorca's eastern sea-board, is already underway. “For the presentation later this month we have a selective and prominent guest list from England, Germany and Spain, predominantly from the finance and real estate sectors but also from sports, politics and fine arts,” said the group spokesperson. This latest development, which if successful, could be one of the most luxurious in Spain, once again confirms Majorca's position as one of the leading residentual places in the Mediterranean. Attempts have been made before in Majorca to build a polo course but the plans ran into difficulties and were later abandoned. Majorca's first polo course would naturally give the island an added lift and could help attract the up-market tourists the local authorities have long dreamed for. The local government is expected to welcome the announcement that a new five star hotel is to be built on the island. It falls into their plan to attract big-spending tourists.
