SOME 40'000 Majorcan flags were flown from balconies and windows across the island during the celebrations for Majorca Day, according to the first estimates by the Council of Majorca. Sources from the Council said that they considered that the initiative promoted this year was a “success in participation” thanks to the collaboration of institutions, newspapers including the Bulletin which gave away flags with its Thursday edition last week, companies, associations and citizens.
Council President, Maria Antonia Munar, thanked the whole of Majorcan society for flying the flag “as a symbol of our region”. The Council of Majorca adopted the flag with its yellow and red stripes (which it shares with the Catalan flag) and purple strip with the Almudaina Palace in white in 1983, shortly after the home rule statute was approved. It has its origin in December 1312, when King Sancho I of Majorca offered it to the Jurats, the governors of the island.
During her Majorca Day speech, Munar spoke of the flag as a symbol uniting all residents. “it is the flag of all Majorcans of good heart, of those born here and those who have come here, as was understood by the thousands and thousands of people who flew the flag from the balcony,” she said.
