Newsdesk THE Consumer Price Index (CPI) dropped by 0.1 per cent in the Balearics last month, bringing inflation for the year up to 1.8 per cent and for the preceding 12 months to 2.2 per cent, according to figures released yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics.

These figures were similar to those in the rest of Spain, the report said.
Prices went up most in the leisure and culture sector (1.3 per cent), followed by hotels, cafes and restaurants (1.1 per cent).
Prices dropped by 3.9 per cent in clothing and footwear, although this was attributed to the summer sales. There was an 0.5 per cent drop in transport, 0.3 per cent drop in household goods and an 0.1 drop in jewellery, cosmetics, services and insurance.

However, the biggest price increases over the previous 12 months were recorded in alcoholic beverages and tobacco (up by 6.3 per cent), followed by hotels, cafes and restaurants (up by 5.9 per cent).

The biggest drops were in medicine (down by 2 per cent) and transport (down by 0.1 per cent).
The Balearics was the only region in Spain, apart from Navarre, where prices went down in August, compared to the previous month, the report said.
