PALMA
THE Guardia Civil investigating the murder of 28-year-old Laura Gallego at the converted lockup she shared with her boyfriend in Marratxi believe that it was her 31-year-old partner who killed her.

Hermenegildo Fernandez Salva, a known crack addict with a criminal record, is currently being held on remand in Palma prison and the central government delegate to the Balearics, Ramon Socias, revealed yesterday that the investigation points the finger at Salva, alias El David. “Despite his initial claims, many of which were contradictory, the investigation has lead the police to strongly believe he is the killer,” Socias said.

Salva did guide police to the battered body of the mother of a two-year-old boy on Saturday night - he claimed that Laura has suffered a motorbike accident in the Son Banya shanty town where they had gone to buy drugs.

However, the autopsy revealed that she had been brutally battered to death and had been dead for about 12 hours by the time Salva raised the alarm.
The two are thought to have started arguing over a drug-related issue and the situation escalated and got out of hand and the prime suspect, who had been served a restraining order by a previous girlfriend, apparently turned “extremely violent”.

Yesterday, as the investigation continued, a minute's silence was held in memory of Laura and to condemn domestic violence by the Balearic government outside its Palma headquarters.

The 28-year-old was the first fatal victim of domestic violence in the Balearics this year but across Spain, the death toll yesterday rose to 42. Women are being killed by their partners at a rate of 1'5 per week.
