CAPDEPERA
CENTRAL government's Environment ministry has ruled that a sun terrace and swimming pool on a coastal strip in the northeast Majorcan district of Capdepera, and a wire fencing barrier stopping walkers enjoying seaside strolls in Soller are to be demolished.

The Rural and Maritime section of the ministry said yesterday that the two steps are to be taken to “recapture” these two sites for the benefit of the public at large as part of a coastal maintenance programme. A spokesman said that the seal of approval for demolition is being applied for from the Coastal department which governs all structural activity around Spain's shorelines.

The swimming pool and sun terrace site, located at Punta dels Ericons in Capdepera is a plot measuring some 236 square metres which was first ceded to its current owner in 1970 for a period of 25 years. The cession was made as a forerunner to the legalisation of “sun terraces” or solariums, stone stairways and swimming pools on this section of the coastline. Now that the “lease” period is up and with the present licensee showing no interest in prolonging the lease, the land will return to the State who have made their intentions to demolish the installations already known.

The second demolition of a wire fencing barrier in Soller is accompanied by a fine of 18'000 euros for the landowner who erected it. Although the owner had removed tiling and posts, the fencing still impeded transit on foot between Alconasser and Bens s'Avall. The Coastal department will rip up any barrier remaining and return the land to its original condition.
