PALMA
AFTER two days of heavy rainfall and storms in the Balearic Islands, yesterday came as a slight respite but the bad weather will be back again today.
Based on forecasts given by the National Weather Agency (AEMET), the Islands will be back on Yellow Alert today in anticipation of widespread rainfall, and it will be particularly heavy in certain areas.

AEMET'S delegate in the Balearics, Agusti Jansa said that although the weather alert was deactivated late yesterday afternoon, it will be triggered again today and is expected to remain in place until early Friday morning on Majorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. It will not however, be lifted in Minorca until midday tomorrow. The weather for the weekend is looking better but there will still be the risk of the odd isolated shower.

On Tuesday this week, particularly strong rainfall had been registered in certain areas of Majorca, such as in Porto Pi in Palma where 33 litres per square metre fell in just a quarter of an hour. The cloudburst produced flooding on the Paseo Maritimo. At Minorca airport, meanwhile, 19 litres per square metre fell in a short space of 20 minutes. The intensity of storms has lessened over the past 24 hours with only 8'000 lightning strikes registered in contrast with the 37'000 which fell the day before.
