FOLLOWING a brutal assault on a doctor at a Portals Nous health centre, Majorca's medical staff association has levelled serious criticism at the regional Ministry for Health for its failure to provide protection for health workers from public aggression.

In a statement released yesterday, the association said that it realised that the health service is having to undergo certain cuts in funding because of the economic crisis. But the association, continued the statement, would under no circumstances tolerate the ministry not finding the money to protect medical staff from the kind of attack which was suffered by Doctor Antonio Passardi.

Medical staff feel that the scourge of aggression towards health workers is on the increase and needs to be stopped in its tracks. A spokesman explained that it is not just a question of physical attacks; medical staff are also vulnerable to psychological and verbal abuse in the workplace.

The association appealed to the ministry to make sure such “appalling brutality” can never take place again and for protective measures at health centres to become a priority of government spending.
