New York.—Majorca's internationally renowned artist and sculptor, Miquel Barceló, took centre stage yesterday in New York's Union Square at the presentation of his new masterpiece “Gran Elefandret”.

The 8-metre high bronze statue is of an elephant “defying the laws of physics” balancing upside down on its trunk.
The Marlborough Gallery which is coordinating the installation of the statue in Manhattan with the Union Square Association, described the work as “brilliant and extraordinary”. It will be formally unveiled in May next year.

The gallery said that the sculpture humorously captures the enormous scale and courage of its conception and transforms the nature of what is generally accepted as a public monument. The four legs of the elephant which seem to be wavering in the air to control its balance are carved out of the same rucked material that represents the skin folds and wrinkles of a live elephant.

The technique is judged to be typical of Barceló's ability to create rich, rugged surfaces. The artist is known, amongst other work, for the dome painted at the Palace of Nations in Geneva which Spain donated to the U.N.
