A motion by the Calvia council to replace our green residence certificate with the old style residence cards is gaining momentum with other councils across Spain showing interest in Calvia’s campaign.
The Calvia council will be taking their motion to a council meeting later this month and they are looking for all party support to move the issue forward. And now other municipalities which have large foreign communities are looking to join the campaign.
It is the British who have suffered the most since the introduction of the green certificate in 2006. The legislation passed down by the Spanish authorities seven years ago stated that national identity cards would be recognised in Spain with the green certificate showing that you are a resident. But as the British do not have their own national identity they have to carry their passports as proof of identity. Unofficially, the Bulletin has been told that this has led to a major increase in passport robberies.
The Calvia council want as much support as possible for their motion so that they can then take the issue to the European Union in Brussels and the Spanish government in Madrid.
The council are also looking at the possibility of forming a committee of experts on this matter which will push for the motion to be carried forward.
