Thousands of university students protested yesterday against the new education plan as the education dispute entered its fourth day
Members of the local government were at the campus for the opening of the new university term but the teacher´s strike and the row over their plans to introduce a three language teaching system in local schools, rather overshadowed the event yesterday. The protestors hurled abuse at the government and called for the Balearic President Bauza to quit.
Some university students came out in support of the teachers who had been on strike since Monday over the language plan.
The Balearic government wants to start teaching local students in English, Catalan and Spanish but teachers say that they do not have the necessary resources or facilities to introduce the system. But support for the strike appears to be waning and the majority of schools were working as normal yesterday despite union claims that up to 70 percent of teachers were still on strike.
