THE price of a cubic metre of water in the Balearics is 2 euros, the most expensive in Spain.
The facts were confirmed by the BRITA report on water quality, presented by an expert committee from the Spanish Foundation for Nutritional Research (FIN). The report revealed that the worst organically tested water quality was tracked in Valencia, Catalonia, Murcia and the Canary Islands. It showed that tap water in Valencia, Catalonia, Murcia and the southeast of Andalucia is “very hard, with high mineral and saline content, and an abundancy of nitrates and nitrites, although within permissible health limits”. Waters of the Mediterranean region “apart from having poor taste problems, have the highest prices in Spain”. The Foundation added that the interiors of Catalonia, the Canary Islands, the Balearics, Segura and Júcar, with scarce water resources and with the necessity to resort to expensive water supplies, “bear a higher price than other regions”. According to experts, in these regions “the need to resort to filtration and purification systems is clearly shown”. Tap water in Spain undergoes quality tests for health purposes every hour.
