TWO people drowned in waters off beaches on Majorca yesterday and two more were rescued and taken to hospital in a serious condition, Guardia Civil officers reported.

At 8.30am, a council worker was cleaning the sand on Muro beach when he noticed a body floating in the water. After the alarm was raised, police and lifeguards succeeded in removing the body from the water and resuscitation was attempted. But at 9.30am, a doctor pronounced, 79-year-old German, Rudof Giur, as dead. Almost simultaneously, at 8.50am on the Playa de Palma at Balneario 14, Emergency Services were alerted that there was a body floating in the water some 200 metres from the shore.

“NO CHANCE” The body was recovered from the water but paramedics announced there was no chance of resuscitation. Guardia Civil officers identified the victim as a 78-year-old Belgian woman, Euroestine Adette.

Also on the Playa de Palma, but at Balneario 15, lifeguards had to go into action around 10.30am to rescue a man who appeared to be drowning. An ambulance was called and the victim, a tourist, was taken to Son Dureta hospital in Palma.

Finally at 11.20am on the beach at Muro, a 78-year-old German woman had to be rescued from the water where she was bathing. In a serious condition, the victim was ferried by ambulance to Inca District hospital. Officers of the Guardia Civil are investigating each of the incidents.
