First lady THE Ses Salines town council meeting broke into applause yesterday when the town officially received the first female Mayor in its history, Maria Bonet. Upon taking her new role, Maria Bonet thanked all those who have supported her and guaranteed that she has “a lot of dedication and enthusiasm to achieve the best for the town. You can find me in the town hall but you can also find me on the streets and in the bars so that I can help find solutions for the smaller matters which are so much more important than some of the larger projects”, she confirmed yesterday. Many other right-wing Mayors from other towns were present at the ceremony, such as the Mayor of Inca, Pere Rotger, who declared that Maria Bonet will work “with humility and will want to do things close to the town's heart”. At the same meeting, the former right-wing local councillor who changed to the mixed group, Francesc Gari, got a surprise yesterday when he sat down on his official seat. He found a caricature of a hanged man. “I will present this at the next meeting to see if the Mayor knows anything and can give me an explanation”, he said. THE 12th Serra de Tramuntana Fair is more than a small market of organic food products produced in the North of the Island. It is also a place where different associations, charities, and foundations meet, all to fight in favour of the conservation and protection of the environment, which is constantly under threat. You could also say that this is a fair where hikers, ecologists and all types of volunteers come together to offer information on all their activities. The Fair opened yesterday and continues today, and is being held in the area of the Lluc Monastery throughout the day. Children enjoyed the fair yesterday and especially enjoyed taking part in the workshop on climatic change, which was organised by Amics de la Terra (Friends of the Earth). THE Mayor of Manacor, Antoni Pastor, has rejected the plans to start the construction of the future Auditorium, as the Balearic Government is unable to fund the investment at the present moment. This was the conclusion after the Mayor met with the Leader of the Balearic Government, Jaume Matas. The Balearic Leader announced that there is a series of other priorities which are to be funded by the government and as a result it is impossible to pay for the work to this building in Manacor. The government had in fact promised to grant 3 million euros for the project which carries a total budget of 4.5 million. The extra money was to be funded by the town council. However, the Mayor wanted to make it clear that this in no way means that the project has been cancelled altogether, instead it has been delayed until the funds can be found. BINISSALEM town council has unanimously agreed to create more jobs for disabled residents in the area.
