STAFF REPORTER EARLY on Sunday afternoon, alarm bells started ringing in Calvia and Andratx after a number of tornadoes were spotted just off the coast. The tornadoes actually began forming in the Bay of Palma and then started spinning their way along the coast to Calvia and then Andratx and were photographed off Santa Ponsa and then the Port of Andratx.

The emergency services received a number of calls alerting them to the presence of the tornadoes and the emergency services were immediately put on alert in the event of any of the tornadoes coming ashore. Emergency services in other parts of the island were also informed and ordered to keep an eye out in the event of more tornadoes forming elsewhere.

The Cap de fiblos are not uncommon in the Balearic islands but only very rarely do they hit land.
When they do, however, they obviously cause serious damage, hence the emergency services were placed on action stations.
