WITH unemployment in the Balearics standing at least 76'643 and with over four million out of work across the country, unemployment remains the general public's primary concern according to the latest CIS poll.

Yesterday, the CCOO general workers' commission in the Balearics painted a gloomy picture of the future.
Their latest data reveals that one in every four Balearic companies is considering reducing its workforce while the rest have no intention of hiring new employees despite having already made a series of job cuts.

A spokesperson for the CCOO said that the report is very negative considering that after two years of huge job losses, a quarter of all businesses are still considering further redundancies.

And again, the union took a swipe at Central Government's controversial labour reforms which sparked the general strike ten days ago, warning that it will only lead to further job losses.

So, with the whole country facing a similar situation, 78.4 percent of people polled in the latest CIS survey said that their primary concern is unemployment.

That said, back in March, the percentage of the population concerned about unemployment was an alarming 83 percent.
In second place is the economy, although there appears to have been a slight improvement in economic confidence and in third place is the performance of the political class.

The country's fourth main worry is immigration.
With regards to the economy, 70 percent consider the situation to be either very bad or bad, four points less than the previous poll showed.
What is more, back in July, 31 percent of those polled said they considered that the economic situation will be just as bad or even worse within the space of a year.

Last month, slightly fewer, 28.8 percent were as pessimistic.
Nevertheless, there appears to be little faith in the political class.
As a result of the current economic and unemployment problems rocking Spain and the corruption scandals involving former and current politicians across most of the country, the behaviour of the political class is the third burning issue bothering the general public.

Immigration is the fourth most concerning problem and is three points up from 12.4 percent in July to 15.4 percent. And, with regards to the overall political situation of Spain, 70 percent considered it to be either very bad or bad.
