PALMA
THE hidden economy in the shoe industry - people working from home - on Majorca has undergone significant growth as a knock-on effect of many companies transferring their major manufacturing operations to Asiatic countries.
Training, Employment and Policy Secretary for the Workers Commission, Rafel Borras said yesterday at a press conference that the shoe industry is being taken up in underprivileged areas of India and China where labour is extraordinarily cheap, and employment rights are non-existent. Borras said that the trend started some years ago but has become more acute in 2008, just as an economic crisis rears its head in Spain and the dole queue lengthens.
