The severe weather which is battering Britain has led to a downturn in holiday sales but tour firms are braced for a flood in sales once the weather improves.

Palma.—After a very strong start to the year, holiday sales have tailed off slightly over the past few weeks.
Industry analyst GfK confirmed a solid start to the year for summer 2014 bookings, but with sales for the winter down on last January.
GfK data shows summer bookings up  three percent year on year in January, leaving sales for the season up two percent. Summer package sales in January were up six percent on a year ago and all-inclusive bookings up nine percent.
Average prices were also up, although by no more than the current inflation rate of two percent, adding £17 to the average price of an all-inclusive booking in January.
