Palma.—Against the back drop of escalating tensions between Russia and the West, Bauza told the Russian media, tour operators and travel agents at the MTT Moscow travel fair, that "they will fall in love with the islands and will want to return, should they come to the Balearics this year."

During the official presentation at the Balearic stand, Bauza said that there is much more to the regions that sun and beaches, he highlighted the numerous sporting opportunities and activity holidays, the nautical sector, the region’s gastronomy and countryside.

He also underlined the Balearics’ vast wealth of culture, such as the exhibition of work by artist Joan Miró which will be touring the Balearics this year.

"That alone is one perfect excuse to come to the Balearics," Bauza said during the presentation.

The President, accompanied by the Balearic Minister for Tourism and Sport, Jaime Martinez, also held a round of meetings with Russian tour operators, in particular Natalie Tours, one of Russia’s largest tour firms with a large programme in the Balearics.

During the day, there was also a special presentation of Balearic sea food dishes carried out by local chefs Tomeu Caldentey and Adrian Quetglas. But, the Balearics and Spain face stiff competition in the Russian market. Last year 2.4 million Russians visited Egypt, compared to the 1.5 which came to Spain and 133,182 to the Balearics and Egypt is expecting to break the three million barrier this year.

And, Russian tour operators forecast a busy time for Goa this year. Last year over 160,000 Russians visited the region, 10 percent more than in 2012, and a further increase is expected this year.
