Palma.— EMT Palma municipal bus drivers confirmed yesterday that they plan to regularly stop bus services on 26 and 28 March for 10 minutes between 8am and 10 am and again between 8pm and 10pm in protest against what they believe are the false allegations made by senior company officials to the local press, intended to hide the reality of their situation to the public.

Comments were made to the press revealing the salaries received by the drivers, something drivers now say is exposing them to verbal abuse by angry citizens.

EMT workers said yesterday the move is just a cover up, for what is really going on behind the scenes.

They have accused company directors of spending company money in a careless way on useless things and hiring expensive and countless private lawyers, when the company already has its own, and the possibility of seeing their wages reduced.

They are also outraged that political positions within the company are paid on average 100,000 euros per year, and given a fixed contract. The fact the managing director of the company drives around in the company’s car on and off working hours is also not helping workers come to terms with the situation. Further strikes lasting two hours are planned for 31 March and 1 April and Palma city council is concerned about the industrial action being taken by bus drivers.

"Workers should be the first ones to ensure the company runs as usual.

"They have a responsibility to ensure EMT does not go into financial trouble again.

"This is a public company but that does not mean the council must step in to cover the financial holes all the time," Julio Martinez spokesman for Palma council said yesterday.

"The money comes from the public, and the public are asking us not to raise taxes so this is not an ideal situation. We are willing to sit down and negotiate with the workers but they must be aware of the reality of the company."
