Apparently, Palma City Council’s Citizen Security department has decided that this year, the annual resort security operation will not start until the beginning of May.
The spokesperson for the ‘eco-nationalist party’, Antoni Verger, said yesterday that with Easter falling much later than usual this year, the lack of sufficient security personnel could cause moments of tension and conflict in the resorts, similar to those witnessed lastsummer when extra police were on duty in the resort popular with Germans and now eastern Europeans.
Last summer, one of Germans most dangerous Hells Angels chapters was dismantled in the resort. Verger questioned why Calvia is able to have an extra 45 police on the beat during Easter when the local council receives five times less funding for policing than Palma City Council does.
Verger accused Palma City Council and governing Partido Popular of being "irresponsible" and pointed out that, traditionally, the tourist policing operation always used to begin at the start of April. "The lack of sufficient officers could lead to a number of problems in the resorts, with illegal street traders etc.," Verger warned.
