Yesterday’s freak storms which caused widespread flooding and damage did not suggest that summer is around the corner, but it starts on Saturday.

Palma.—Thousands of people, in particular holiday makers, got caught in yesterday’s storms which brought down trees in the very centre of Palma and caused widespread flooding to roads and properties across the island.
Between 12.30 and 3pm, 360 bolts of lightning struck Majorca and as much as 69 litres of rain fell per square metre in Campos, for example, or 47 litres in Palma.
But, the good news is that the storms will move away from the Balearics this morning and will be few and far between over the next few months. The Balearic Met. office forecast yesterday that this summer, which starts at 12.51 on Saturday, is going to slightly hotter than usual in the Balearics with rainfall not expected to be above average.
Balearic Met. office boss, Maria Jose Guerrero yesterday said that after a drier and warmer spring than usual, the same can be said for this coming summer.
