It has been a summer season of mixed messages in the Balearics with the forecasts of a record season being somewhat premature. The build up to the tourist season was laced with talk of another record year for the Balearic tourist industry, however, as the season gradually comes to an end, it is unlikely any regional records are going to be broken - contrary to mainland Spain which is having one of the best summer seasons in decades.
Yesterday, the Bulletin reported a recent, and unexpected, fall in the number of cruise ships and cruise passengers coming to Palma and today, the Bulletin can report that the amount of money spent by foreign tourists during the first six months of this year has also fallen.
Between January and July, a total of 5.401 million euros was spent by holiday makers from overseas in the Balearics, 4.2 percent less than during the first six months of last year - the sharpest fall in expenditure in Spain.
The average amount of money spent by foreign visitors on a daily basis also fell by 3.6 percent in comparison to last year.
