Palma.—Manuel Onieva last night made the first of his last speeches as the Mayor of Calvia at the commemorations to mark the 785th  anniversary of the  landing of King Jaime in Santa Ponsa.
Onieva has decided not to stand for reelection at the local elections next May and has made it clear his decision is based  strictly on  personal reasons and was taken some months ago, he has categorically denied that it has anything to do with events in Magalluf this summer.
In the crowd last night were  a number of leading local politicians including the Speaker of the Balearic Parliament, Margalida Durán and the Balearic government spokesperson and Minister for Public Administration, Nuria Riera and Onieva told them that being mayor “is and has been one of the best things to have happened in his life”.
However, he said that the journey he embarked on in June 2011 is now nearing its end and thanked all of the people who have had the confidence in him over the years and will continue to do until he stands down.
