Nuria Riera continued meeting teachers, parents and shop stewards yesterday in an attempt to solve the dispute over trilingual teaching.
Palma.—Teachers have made it clear over the past few weeks that they are not opposed to teaching more English in schools but are unhappy with the model the Balearic government has drawn up.
The TIL programme has been ruled “invalid” by the Balearic High Court and yesterday, the teachers’ union STEI, the UGT general workers’ union and secondary school principals urged the new Minister for Education to honour that ruling and scrap TIL, introduce new education policies and file all the charges pending against teachers for having apparently broken the law with regards to failing to teach TIL or take industrial action in protest.
The various groups also asked the minister to grant schools more powers to decide how they go about their business and to develop a multi lingual curriculum in consensus with teachers.
