Palma.—There was plenty of encouraging talk to mark Balearic Day at the World Travel Market in London yesterday, but there were also some serious warnings from tourism industry chiefs.
Meliá Hotels CEO, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, held a press briefing to showcase the investment the leading global hotel chain is making in its hotels in Magalluf and stressed the need for all parties involved in the resort to work together in order to clean up Magalluf’s image and to reinvent the resort as the quality, family destination it once was.
However, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, who, along with his father Gabriel Escarrer Snr., who founded the hotel chain, has been critical of the lack of action taken this summer to uphold law and order in the resort, said that it could take as long as three to four years to repair the resort’s image which was seriously damaged this year.
There has been no major investment in Magalluf for the past 40 years but Meliá does see a bright future for the resort, hence why it is investing over 130 million euros in Magalluf.
