Four members of Palma’s Local Police force have been arrested by the Guardia Civil and National Police in connection with alleged extortion. And today, the head of the Local Police, Juan Mut and the city Councillor for Citizen Security, Guillermo Navarro, are due to appear in a Palma court to answer questions relating to acts of alleged extortion in the Playa de Palma by members of the force.
Today, the two men will be quizzed about a particular incident involving a member of the force’s GAP rapid reaction unit at the end of last year.
Court house sources said yesterday that the Guardia Civil and the National Police have been cooperating in a joint investigation into the alleged extortion of tourist businesses along the Playa de Palma by members of the Local Police force.
The joint investigation is also apparently looking into claims of alleged fixing of exams for candidates wishing to join the force.
For the moment, Palma City Council is making no comment, all sources at City Hall have said that they plan to be “prudent” and that all their assistance is at the full disposal of the court and the investigators.
