Nearly 47,500 people have signed a petition launched by the Balearic environmental group GOB backing calls for the closure of the safari park in Sa Coma after two chimpanzees escaped last week.
The pair managed to break out of their cages last Monday and run amok in the zoo’s restaurant, scaring visitors, before fleeing.
A massive search was mounted on land and from the air and later on Monday after the female chimp, Eve, was located and shot by the authorities. Adam, was found dead three days later.
He had fallen into a water treatment park near to the zoo and drowned.
The incident has sparked local and international outrage with animal rights groups calling for full investigations and the closure of the park.
GOB have criticised the zoo for apparently failing to maintain its installations sufficiently well and has launched the petition to pressurise the Minister for Environment and Agriculture into ordering the closure of the zoo.
In the meantime, GOB wants the public to keep on signing.
