The world’s largest cruise ship, the Allure of the Seas, will benefit the Spanish economy to the tune of 27 million euros this year. This calculation has been made for the ship that yesterday started Mediterranean cruising operations from its summer home port of Barcelona and which is expected to carry a total of 150,000 passengers through the summer until October.
The Royal Caribbean ship has mainly operated around the Caribbean but now that it has been pressed into service in the Mediterranean, economic advantages will be felt by Barcelona - to the tune of 17.5 million euros - Malaga and Palma, which can anticipate eight million euros. The first voyage for the ship, which is the size of four football pitches, will be a short one of five nights that will take in Rome and Naples.
Subsequently, it will operate seven-night cruises up until the middle of October. On Monday next week it will dock in Palma at 8a.m and stay in port until 4p.m.
The ship is over 360 metres in length and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,318 served by 2,384 crew.
