According to the Guardian last week, UK voters want closer relationship with EU in ‘significant’ shift since Brexit
Major study finds public see ties with Europe as more important than links with US and many ‘exhausted’ by ‘toxic’ debate
Almost twice as many UK voters now believe a close relationship with the EU is more important for peace, prosperity and security than ties with the US, according to a major new study of post-Brexit attitudes.
The report, based on extensive polling and discussion groups with people of all Brexit persuasions, finds that attitudes towards the EU are becoming more favourable across a range of policy areas, and that the entire Brexit debate is now far less toxic and more pragmatic.
This, its authors say, will give a potential Labour government “space and permission” to work towards closer links, particularly on issues of trade, security and defence, where a clear majority of the public is now in favour.
The report by the independent thinktank British Future found that 52% of the public would now like the UK to have a closer relationship with the EU, with only 12% saying it should have a more distant one, and 27% in favour of maintaining the status quo.

“Nigel Farage finish 3rd in I'm a celebrity get me out of here.” Oh, my days did you REALLY just write that? You believe that demonstrates a popularity for right-wing populism? Guffaw.
Olaf BachmannSo simple drop Brexit. How long would accession take for the U.K. to rejoin. Meeting the entry criteria would not be politically possible with debt at current levels. Unwinding treaties made since leaving the European Union would cause ‘ problems ‘ And the European Union has enough chaos dealing with a troublesome east. So this is the reality for probably 20 or more years.
It's about time to mount pressure in the UK to correct the Brexit mistake. To campaign to "pressure" Spain over privileges for the English is a pipe dream. It won't happen. France won't help with that either. The problem was and is in Westminster. Drop Brexit.
Ulla JacksonSorry, ... that's a lot of nonsens.....
James WalkerSince when is a TV programme relevant for an ex EU Farage representing the UK because he came third? That ya a kit if nonsense to me It was exactly this, dividing the Tory MPs which prompted the general election about Brexit.
James WalkerWell last week the guardian did an opinion piece . That … concluded that project fear was unfounded, surprise, surprise. And that the U.K. has had few downsides in economic performance in comparison to similar economies. The chair of Nissan recently made similar comments, when announcing £2.2 billion investment in the Nissan Sunderland site. The leaders of the opposition has also made it clear there is no economic advantages to return the U.K. to the European Union. But would seek closer working relationships. So those who yearn for the return to the U.K. European Union past I’m afraid will be disappointed. So the future is making the current relationship work.
What aload of nonsense coming from Humphrey, move on it's people like you that can't get to grips with democracy unless it goes in your favour. We have just seen Gerry Wilder romp to victory in The Netherlands who is an EU sceptic and Nigel Farage finish 3rd in I'm a celebrity get me out of here. Population of people across the world now want change. Less establishment meddling in people's lives. I'm not sure where you are from Humphrey but I'm guessing inside the M25 bubble where you lot are so unattached from the rest of civilization and read The Guardian.
Although I would be in favour of re-joining and voted to remain, please, no more referendums. Asking the public for their opinion on such complex matters as the UK's status in the EU is not the way to do it and should never have been actioned. The only reason a referendum was held was because the Conservative party were deeply split as to leaving/remaining and Prime Minister David Cameron said, well if you can't make up your mind we'll ask the voters. Big mistake. The issues are too complex and too long term for the average voter to grasp. The British public voted leave based on sound-bites and that ended in tears. Leave these major decisions to the politicians that we pay to take them. That's their job and their responsibility.
Sadly, not going to happen.
